Music has always been a big part of my life. My moods are shaped by the music that is playing, large chunks of my life I remember in terms of music instead of words, music can overwhelm (and sometimes underwhelm) me.
When I listen to music I listen to every chord, every rhythm, every instrument, and now every lyric. I can recall times in my life by the kind of music that I was listening to and often remember specific songs as they relate to a specific memory. (For instance - my 3rd grade boyfriend Maurice Keiser and my song was "I want to dance with somebody.." I don't know what is more surprising - that I had a boyfriend in 3rd grade or that we both would run around the playground singing "I want to dance with somebody, I want to feel the heat with somebody - with somebody that loves me." Yikes. In 3rd grade?? I am quite certain I had NO idea what those lyrics meant and you can be rest assured that we never did dance together, never felt any kind of heat with one another, but we sure thought we loved one another - I had the candy Valentine's day heart that said so for a long time.)
Anyway, I have (after 10 months now) heard "Clay's song." It is perfect. And sweet. And old. It's "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart. Lame, you say? I never listened to the words until the other night on the way to get Casey and I sonic for dinner. I heard it and I cried. So, here it is...
May the good lord be with you
down every road you roam
and may sunshine and happiness
surround you when you're far from home
and may you grow to be proud
dignified and true
and due unto others
as you'd have done to you
be courageous and be brave
and in my heart you'll always stay
forever young
may good fortune be with you
may your guiding light may be strong
build a stairway to heaven
with a prince or a vagabond
and may you never love in vain
and in my heart you'll always remain
forever young
and when you finally fly away
I'll be hoping that I served you well
for all the wisdom of a lifetime
no one can ever tell
but whatever road you choose
I'm right behind you, win or lose
forever young
It's perfect. I am sure there will be more "Clay songs" along the way, but this one fits for now!
